The Internet is like a ball pool

The Internet is like a huge ball pool. It’s fun, exciting, and hearty. The balls are within reach and you can pick them up and play with them. You can move them from one place to another and navigate them. But it’s hard to keep them. It seems easy, take a ball you like and you can put it in a pocket. And maybe one or two will fit, but no more. If you want to take some more, because, for example, you want a few of the same color, you have to take them out of the pool. Coming out of it. And getting out of the pool is no fun. Also, pulling balls out of the pool sounds like the exact opposite of having fun. When they are out of the pool they lose their appeal immediately. It’s fun to be inside and keep playing. This is how bookmarking is. It’s not fun. Also, if you want to get more you have to get in and out of the ball pool and we all know how difficult it is to move around in it. And, honestly, it’s not serious to take a ball from the ball pool, it’s much more logical to go back and look for a similar one. Hopefully, it will be the same.

When you are inside the pool you are in a state of flow. And that’s the fun: free surfing. But it’s easy to get disoriented and lost. And when that happens it’s easy to start spinning around, especially if we see absolutely no trace of where we just passed by. To orient ourselves at least we need this, to see that we can leave a trail. There’s no point in leaving crumbs behind us, but we can mark the balls. But without taking them out of the pool, because it’s still just as boring. The ideal would be to be able to do it from inside the pool, to have the context, the perspective, and to continue with the fun.
